Educational Software and Games - Great extension for BrainPop

Dear all,

Sheppard Software has a large library of educational games that would complement BrainPop and reinforce what you are doing in class.  I like the Food Chain game shown below.  Click on the images to go to the sites.

ThingLink - Sounds weird but can be use in EVERY Subject

How easy is this?

·         Upload an image

·         Highlight a section

·         ‘tag’ the section with a link to an image, description, video, social media post or webpage

·         Save and share – link, embed code, tweet, etc

To view, people look at the image and hover on your tags (shown as symbols or circles).  Up pops information and links to more digital content.  Here are some ideas:

ü  Maths – identify plane and solid shapes in a plan view of the city

ü  Art – identify elements of a painting that show it is from the Renaissance era

ü  English – identify abstract nouns in a poem and define

ü  Science – identify flora and fauna via scientific name in a rainforest scene and link to information

ü  Geography – identify the country in which a town is located via geographical features

ü  History – identify historical figures in a tapestry and link to biographies

ü  Food Tech – identify quantities needed for each ingredient in an image (to create a dish)

Endless possibilities.  Why not trial it in the last couple of weeks of school?

Click on the image below to go to ThingLink and interact with my example below.  Need help?  Email mjorgensen@cac.qld.edu.au.

Regards,

Matthew

Doing a Google search today? Try Qwiki instead - Wikipedia in Gold Class

Qwiki is a quick wiki.  What?

A wiki is a web page of information that groups, friends, and families can edit together.  Wikipedia is moderated by trusted members of the Wikipedia community who are experts, authorities and sometimes just everyday people who know a great deal about a subject.  Wikis can be edited and altered regularly and this enables them to be current and mostly accurate.  However, we always encourage more than one source of information to validate our arguments.  Wikipedia is valid, but further investigation of the sources of the Wikipedia article and other authoritative sources will help clarify concepts.

Qwiki is a multimedia wiki experience, where the text is read out for you, and images, text, maps and video combine to create a truly interesting presentation.  You can also embed the presentation, turn subtitles on and off, find related articles, add your own content to the presentation and jump to different sections on the presentation timeline. The content is still sourced from Wikipedia, so students need to use other sources to gather a wide range of information.  For further information on Plagiarism, using Word to reference and critical literacies (correct researching), click on the links.

Online Stuff

1.       Cool Online Application 1
Symbaloo allows you to create a tiled home webpage on which you can access all your favourite websites.  I use it as my only homepage, cutting down the time it takes for the browser to load.  If you visit a number of websites on a semi regular basis, this is the tool for you.

2.       Cool Online Application 2
Storybirds are short, visual stories that you make with family and friends to share and (soon) print.  Is this something you can use in class??  Here is an example.  Check out the author’s name.  Don’t tell me there is another one out there.  I feel sorry for him/her.

Cool Stuff

Please take a look and pass them on to your teaching partners.

1.      YouTube Video Filter – Educational Video Library
Not many of us know about this or how to use it!  The filter enables you to submit a YouTube (or other) video, which is evaluated and then made available in the Educational Video Library for teachers to use.  You can then embed the video in your Passmarc course and students can then watch it at school without the need for any log in credentials.

2.      Comprehensive ‘Collection’ websites
The following websites have gathered a truckload of links and resources.  Have a look and see if there is anything you can run with:

http://www.educational-freeware.com/
http://www.freetech4teachers.com/
http://www.refseek.com/directory/educational_videos.html
http://cogdogroo.wikispaces.com/
http://blueblots.com/freebies/25-sites-to-download-free-royalty-stock-photo-and-textures/
http://www.freeware-guide.com/
http://www.freewareweb.com/
http://www.artsoftware.org/wiki/index.php/Main_Page
http://www.ofset.org/tiki-index.php?page=ofset

3.      Cool Online Application 1
Creaza can do so many things – cartoon making, soundtracking, video editing and mind mapping.  It’s free to join and looks great!

4.      Cool Online Application 2
Aviary is a free suite of powerful online creation tools, similar to Creaza.
